Death & Transfer of Mortal Remains

The Consulate General in New York is competent for the treatment of cases of death in the USA (within the 44 States covered by the Consulate General) of an Algerian national.

 

Treatment consists of the transcription of the death on the civil registers of the Consulate General and the issuance of the Authorization for transfer of body in case the family of the deceased decided on burial in Algeria.

What to do in case of death?

1st step:

The family members or relatives of a national who died in the United States should immediately contact the Consulate General to announce the death by providing all useful information for the identification of the deceased (copy of passport, consular registration card, national identity card...) and specifying the cause and place of death.

2nd Step:

Family members or relatives of a national who died in the United States should contact a local funeral company to agree on the procedure for the transfer of mortal remains to Algeria. The designated funeral company is responsible for all administrative and other procedures (transport of the mortal remains from the place of death to its offices, withdrawal of the death certificate and of health documents, mortuary toilet, embalming, reservation of air transport of the remains and transportation to airport).

3rd Step:

 On the basis of the file provided by the funeral company composed of:

     - Original of the full death certificate

- Medical letter issued by Department of Health (non- infection or non- communicable disease)

- Transit permit issued by City Hall

- Embalming certificate issued by Funeral Services stating that the remains have been prepared in accordance with the regulations governing the international shipment of human remains.  

 

The Consulate General issues an Authorization of transfer of body which allows the admission of the mortal remains in Algeria.

 

The Consulate General is also responsible to notify, through the City Hall (La Commune) the family of the deceased in Algeria as well as airport authorities the arrival of mortal remains in Algeria in order to facilitate the formalities of removal by the family.

Insurance Coverage for Body Repatriation for Burial in Algeria

The Algerian insurance company SAA (Société Nationale d’Assurance) is currently offering Algerian citizens living overseas an insurance policy, with individual or group coverage, guaranteeing repatriation of the body of a deceased person to Algeria. SAA also guarantees a roundtrip ticket for a close relative accompanying the body during transportation.
